Octopush, the debut EP from London based producer Ekhe, is a masterful juxtaposition of blissful ambient synth textures and intensely polyrhythmic techno. Ekhe draws influences from artists as far afield as Tim Hecker and math-metal band Meshuggah, and, indebting himself largely to Middle Eastern and African rhythmic ideas, has sought to expand the rhythmic palette of modern dance music, finding a niche somewhere in the ether between the analog tones of Isao Tomita, the odd time signatures of Lumisokea and the club friendly focus of Minor Science. Released in April 2018, Ekhe's Octopush is a living, breathing oxymoron. As beautiful as it is explosive; as groovy as it is complex; as ready for audiophile hi-fi systems as it is for the dancefloor.
